The new 5 Series is the most optimum car in the BMW lineup: It is more sporty than the 7 Series and more comfortable than the 3 Series. The 5 Series provides comfort and sportiness in a great balance, making it a great luxury saloon car.
The 5 Series has good engine options for people with different performance needs. BMW offers the 5 Series with 4 engine options in the US:
the 2.0 liter turbo inline 4-cylinder (B48B20) producing 255 horsepower in the 530i,
the 3.0 liter turbo inline 6-cylinder (B58) producing 375 horsepower in the 540i,
the 3.0 liter turbo inline 6-cylinder (B58) with an electric engine producing a total of 483 horsepower in the 550e, and
the 4.4 liter turbo V8 (S68) with an electric engine producing a total of 717 horsepower in the top of the line M5.
However, the car used for this test has the 1.6 liter turbo inline 4-cylinder (B48B16) engine. This engine is the same as the regular B48B20 engine but it is downsized by a modification on the crankshaft and the piston rod. Piston rod is shorter to provide 1600cc instead of 2000cc volume. As a result, instead of 255 horsepower, it produces 190 horsepower with the help of a small electric engine. This engine is only available in Turkey. Despite this, the performance of the 520i is not bad at all. It completes 0 to 60 miles per hour acceleration in 7.7 seconds and has a top speed around 150 miles per hour. The performance of the car is positively affected by the addition of the mild hybrid system, which uses a small electric motor to help the car. It is useful especially in the first movements. The performance of the car would be sufficient for most customers. If more performance is needed, the more powerful engine choices can be selected.
The handling is a strength for the BMW 5 Series. The 5 Series is offered in both rear wheel drive and the four wheel drive system called x-Drive. The car tested is rear wheel drive and it definitely carries the sporty genes of BMW. Even though it is a big car in size, the driver does not feel the weight and huge size of the car when cornering. It is very stable. The steering wheel is direct, responsive, in communication with the driver and gives good feedback to the driver. While the steering is soft at low speeds, making maneuvering easier, it becomes harder at high speeds and gives confidence.
The 5 Series is equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission made by ZF. This transmission performs excellently, adapting seamlessly to various driving styles. It shifts smoothly for a comfortable, relaxed drive and becomes more responsive and rapid when driving in a sportier manner.
The interior of the new 5 Series is where it shines. It looks very futuristic. It has glass interior panels similar to the 7 Series. These glass panels are illuminated, working with the ambient lighting system. There are many color options. The infotainment screen is the same screen as the 3 Series. The new connected screen is somewhat controversial among BMW fans; however, I personally like this screen a lot. First of all, it looks very modern compared to the screen on the previous generation 5 Series. Additionally, it is very easy to use. The menus and controls are fairly simple and they can be operated very easily while driving. The only drawback is that the climate controls are integrated in the screen. The temperature control can be accessed directly but you need to go into another section for other climate control features. I would prefer to have a separate climate control button or screen that can be accessed directly. Still, it is very functional and handy.
The 5 Series comes with many safety features: blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, and adaptive cruise control. The navigation system of the 5 Series is also top technology. It has live traffic information. Additionally, the 5 Series has the artificial virtuality integrated into the navigation system, which makes it very easy to follow the route. These advanced functions work very well while driving.
The 5 Series contains a lot of comfort features in it. It has a heated steering wheel and heated and cooled front seats. Heated rear seats can also be added with an extra option. These features add up to the high quality feeling of the car. The car tested has the optional extended merino leather, which is very upscale. The test car also has the sport seats, which are very comfortable but also sporty at the same time. Every part of the interior feels very solid and well built, which is what is expected from BMW in this segment.
The sound system of the 5 Series is very good. The car tested has the Harman/Kardon sound system, which was very impressive. Listening to music in the 5 Series was a very pleasant experience. For people who think that the Harman/Kardon sound system is not enough, BMW offers Bowers & Wilkins sound system option on the 5 Series as well. This sound system is very impressive and provides a truly concert-like experience.
The backseats and trunk of the BMW 5 Series is spacious. Even tall people can cruise comfortably in the back seats of the 5 Series. The middle seat in the back seat is not as roomy as the other seats but it still has enough space for short trips for an adult. The trunk of the 5 Series is very large and will satisfy most customers.
The BMW 5 Series is an important model in the brand's product range, balancing luxury, comfort and sportiness in a way that few competitors can achieve. First introduced in 1972, the 5 Series has long been a benchmark for BMW's executive sedans. With the new G60 generation, BMW continues to improve the formula by offering a variety of engine options, cutting-edge technology and impressive performance. The 5 Series stands out with its elegant interior design, excellent handling and advanced features, which makes it an excellent choice for those looking for both comfort and a dynamic driving experience. It is a true representation of BMW's commitment to luxury and driving pleasure.
